The New Technology – Nanotechnology

by Winston Kao on July 12, 2010

The new technology—nanotechnology. It’s the technology of the future and if we don’t regulate it and safeguard it from the rest of life, we may not have a future.

Nanotechnology, what is that? Well, scientists today are able to make nanotized particles. A good simple example would be mercury. They can now make it anywhere from 1000 times smaller to as small as a 1,000,000 times smaller. They can do this to Vitamin C, Calcium, Iron particles, plastic particles, oils and liquid infusions. You name it, they are now able to do it. And yes, this most definitely will be the new frontier of the cutting edge science of the next New Millennium.

Madame Curie - From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Like Madame Curie, she was a pioneer in the field of radioactivity and the first person honored with two Nobel Prizes—in physics and chemistry. Her death on 4 July 1934 was from aplastic anemia, almost certainly contracted from exposure to radiation. The damaging effects of ionizing radiation were not then known, and much of her work had been carried out in a shed, without taking any safety measures. She had carried test tubes containing radioactive isotopes in her pocket and stored them in her desk drawer, remarking on the pretty blue-green light that the substances gave off in the dark.

Due to the levels of radioactivity, her papers from the 1890s are considered too dangerous to handle. Even her cookbook is highly radioactive. They are kept in lead-lined boxes, and those who wish to consult them must wear protective clothing.

We are far wiser, I hope, that we should learn from historical ignorance that we should not continue to be so naïve. Nanotechnology is new! We are ignorant of the facts and dangers of this new technology. And this time, it won’t affect just a few human beings, but a whole population and the entire civilization!

We are now using it as cosmetics, coatings on foods for preservation, fertilizers are now being nanotized. Many different kinds of plastics and metals are also being nanotized, and what kind of protection are these workers who are manufacturing these materials utilizing? How much do you want to bet “nothing” in the field of protection? They’re touching it, breathing it, and I would expect with time they will be developing “funny nano symptoms.”
